Abstract |
Isaria macroscyticolais a hypocrealean pathogen of Cydnidaefirst described by Dr. Yosio Kobayasi in 1941.Since then, records of this species have been limited, and therefore no cultures have been established andits phylogenetic position is unknown. Recently, synnemata onMacroscytus japonensiswere collectedfrom Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. These were identified asI.macroscyticolabased on the morphologies ofthe synnemata, conidiophores, and conidia. Since cultures established by conidial isolations exhibitedpale purplish colonies andAcremonium-like synanamorph, this species was suggested to belong toPurpureocillium(Ophiocordycipitaceae) rather thanIsaria(Cordycipitaceae). The sequence similarities ofthe internal transcribed spacer region and 28S of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the elongation factor 1-alpha gene sequences ofI.macroscyticolaandP.lilacinumwere 99e100%. Furthermore,I.macro-scyticolawas phylogenetically nested within theP.lilacinumclade. Accordingly, we conclude thatI.macroscyticolais a synnematous form and synonym ofP.lilacinum.
