タイトル Chapter 20 - Ecotoxicological Assessment of Antibiotics in Freshwater Using Cyanobacteria
ジャーナル Cyanobacteria
Abstract Antibiotics of anthropogenic origin are among the emerging pollutants of greatest concern for water managers. Once released in freshwaters, antibiotics can affect not just human health but the entire ecosystem function because of their toxicity to bacteria that represent the basis of trophic chains and nutrient cycles. In this context, the chapter focuses on the use of cyanobacteria to assess the ecotoxicology of antibiotics in freshwaters. The chapter summarizes available knowledge from basic research regarding toxicological effects in cyanobacterial cultures and in field populations (biofilms) to applied aspects and biotechnological tools, namely bioreporters based on genetically engineered cyanobacteria and early biomarkers of toxicity (e.g., intracellular free calcium). Beyond a comprehensive compilation of current knowledge, this chapter also offers a critical evaluation of the toxicological methods and parameters used so far, as well as the knowledge gaps to cover before cyanobacteria can finally form part of routine water monitoring programs and regulations.
