タイトル Epitypification of planktonic Cyanobacteria Raphidiopsis curvispora (Aphanizomenonaceae, Nostocales) based on the strain from the type locality

Abstract ABSTRACTRaphidiopsis curvispora was described by Watanabe (1995: as Cylindrospermopsis curvispora) from a specimen obtained from Makino‐ike Pond in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Herein, we propose an epitype designation for Raphidiopsis curvispora based on detailed morphological observations and genetic analysis of samples collected from the type locality. Phylogenies of the 16S rRNA gene, 16S–23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer region and rbcLX revealed that specimens from the type locality form a clade closely related only to Korean R. curvispora, suggesting that the species is distinct from those reported in Africa. Based on the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants, the name Raphidiopsis gangetica, derived from Anabaenopsis gangetica (Nair 1967), appears to have priority over R. curvispora. However, because Nair (1967) did not designate a type specimen or iconotype, the name R. curvispora is still applicable to this taxon. We specified the isotype, which was not mentioned in Watanabe (1995). The epitype proposed in the present study is valuable for future taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of Raphidiopsis.
